  • About Us - A Profile of Custom Ladder Company

    Custom Ladder Company (CLC), is based in the regional centre of Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia.

    The founders of CLC first operated a wholesale business providing product to the building and construction industries, including the design and supply of special purpose ladders. From this, an opportunity was seen for the development of an improved platform ladder leading to a breakthrough in the design of this product class.

    In 1994, CLC commenced experimentation with a series of design possibilities to produce a safe, productive and cost effective mobile platform-ladder. Examination of designs on the international markets revealed there was an opportunity to improve the product genus, particularly with respect to safe operation. This observation was borne out by Australian industry sources. Examination of international patents revealed that improved solutions for safe mobile ladder designs have been sought as far back as 1931. In 1995, CLC commenced marketing of Stockmaster, a technically innovative range of mobile ladder-platforms.

    Today CLC products are available across Australia through our extensive distributor network, and is also exported to Asia and Europe. CLC products provide safe, easy to use, and productive access solutions for Manufacturing, Records Management, Retailing, Warehousing, Transport, and many other applications.

    CLC's strategic philosophy is to offer professional quality access equipment with full factory back up service and technical advice.

    Our products are manufactured to comply with ASNZS - 1992.1 : 1996 (Australian & New Zealand ladder manufacturing standard), EN131 - Parts 1 & 2 (harmonised European ladder manufacturing standard) and the CE - Machinery directive

    Our pricing reflects the quality philosophy of our products. Put simply, it is to be expected that a quality product will cost more than a cheaply made alternative. However we believe when it comes to the purchase price; the quality of an access device is paramount in ensuring the safety, ease of use and long term satisfaction of our customers.

  • Risk Assessment and Australian Standards

    Duties of Employers
    Under the Occupational Health and Safety Acts of the Commonwealth and States of Australia, it may be said in general terms that is incumbent on the employer to provide a safe workplace for all employees and that this requirement is extended to cover the use of any equipment to be used by employees.

    By example, from the Victorian act;

    "Duties of employers to employees
    (1) An employer must, so far as is reasonably practicable, provide and maintain for employees of the employer a working environment that is safe and without risks to health."

    and from the New South Wales act under Duties of employers;

    "(b) ensuring that any plant or substance provided for use by the employees at work is safe and without risks to health when properly used,"

    Duties of Manufacturers
    It is also a requirement for Designers, Manufacturers and Suppliers that any product supplied is in so far a practicable free from risks when correctly used, and that information about correct use of the product is provided.

    Again, from the New South Wales act;

    "Duties of designers, manufacturers and suppliers of plant and substances for use at work

    (1) A person who designs, manufactures or supplies any plant or substance for use by people at work must:
    (a) ensure that the plant or substance is safe and without risks to health when properly used, and
    (b) provide, or arrange for the provision of, adequate information about the plant or substance to the persons to whom it is supplied to ensure its safe use.

    Risk Assessments for Custom Ladder Company (CLC) Products
    The risk assessments for Custom Ladder Company (CLC) products are provided for this purpose. These are given in section 3b.

    It must be understood that the Risk Assessments provided do not ensure the suitability of the associated item for any given task. The decision to purchase and use the item for any given task is solely the responsibility of the employer. Any decision to purchase should be preceeded buy the employer undertaking a risk assessment of the task, and the product risk assessments given here must be part of this risk assessment.

    Similarly, manufacturing standards such as AS/NZS 1892.1:1996 (the Australian/New Zealand standard for portable metal ladders) do not ensure the suitability of any product manufactured under the standard for any given task.

    The purpose of a manufacturing standard is to provide a manufacturing specification in order to minimise the risk to health and safety of the user, by example from AS/NZS 1892.1:1996;

    "Objective: The objective of this standard is to provide designers, manufacturers and regulatory authorities with the minimum performance and dimensional criteria for portable metal ladders, in order to minimise the risk to the health and safety of portable ladder users."

    From the above it is understood that whether or not a product has, or has not, been manufactured to a standard must form part of the product risk assessment.
